Sept. 29

Currently James Turrell (known for his work within the Light and Space movement) has heavily influenced many of the graphics that are trending on most social media platforms. Animal prints have been refreshed with the introduction of bright colors and have been the go-to print since late 2020. “Melting” graphics and text have remained a staple font and style to incorporate into social media info-graphics and artistic graphics as well. Vibrant pinks, purples, greens, blues, browns, and neutral pastels are dominating the fashion industry, social media, and beauty content summer/fall 2021.

Topics

Places/Events:

  • Met Gala 2021 was the first major in-person fashion event during the pandemic. It was very interesting to see social media’s negative reaction to Vogue inviting tik-tokers, AOC’s statement dress being denounced not because of its political statement, but because of the irony of designer, Aurora James, currently dating the heir of a billionaire, dressing her. Outside of the drama of the event, Yara Shahidi and Troye Sivan were undeniably the best dressed of the night.

People:

  • Ella Emhoff is Kamala Harris’ Step Daughter who has been on everyones screen since the 2020 Presidential Inauguration. She is quirky and grunge and so wonderfully gen-z.

  • Iris Law is Jude Law’s eldest daughter who is taking the modeling world by storm. She’s signed to IMG models, English, & effortlessly cool.

  • Natalia Bryant is Kobe Bryant’s eldest daughter who has simultaneously started her freshman year at USC & her professional modeling signed to IMG. She’s incredible, she’s lovely, she’s kind, & she’s loved by all.

  • Nicki Minaj KEEPS doing the wrong thing & it hurts.

Film/TV:

  • Netflix’s Squid Game is still everything & more - but now, the conversation has shifted to question what ideological nuances are lost during the translation of scripts from one language to another. Native Korean speakers have highlighted some of the translation discrepancies in Squid Game. The social commentary surrounding this show is necessary & has allowed people from all over the world to share their own experiences with mistranslated content.

Things:

Environmentalism:

  • Greta Thunberg’s Speech at YouthCOP calling out global leaders was phenomenal. Audio grabs from this speech are trending on TikTok, which essentially means she’s as important as the Queen of England.

  • Latinx Heritage Month is almost over, so here is a list of free, really cool activists within the community that we should all get to know.

  • Slow Travel includes train travel and cross country travel by car. I am predicting that we will see an influx of people choose this method of Travel because it is less crowded than air travel (covid-safe), more environmentally conscious than air travel, and a new experience for many. Here is an environmental take on why bringing train travel back is beneficial to the environment.

  • Introspective card games that necessitate critical analysis keep popping up on social media & are so much fun. Two of my favorites are We’re Not Really Strangers (WNRS) & the card game of my dreams, Reflex. 2020 has shifted the cultural narrative & many of the conversations that I have been having with my friends have been significantly more introspective & complex than ever before. I can’t recommend card games like these enough because they prompt us to ask ourselves why we think the way that we do & allow us to understand our friends better. These games are also just genuinely FUN to play.
